KARACHI, Dec 13: The Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, has emphasised the need for stronger liaison between the police and people at the lowest level so that the latter could be provided relief.

“Public confidence in the police will serve as a catalyst in decreasing crimes, and towards the police’s good police performance and repute.

He was addressing senior police officers during a visit to the Central Police Office on Tuesday.

The Provincial Home Minister, Rauf Siddiqui, Home Secretary Brig (Retd) Ghulam Mohammed Mohtaram, Provincial Police Officer Asad Jehangir, City Police Chief Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui and other officials were present in the meeting.

He appreciated the police for encountering challenges; however, he said that there was a need to solve the problems of people at the lower level and provide them with a sense of confidence.

The governor said that alongside keeping an eye on crimes, improved police performance and its achievements should also be publicised.

He said that despite relatively less wages and limited resources, police had given a praiseworthy demonstration of its performance against terrorism and during international events.

He told the meeting that alongside departmental accountability, performance was also judged through outer scales.

“Exteriorly, the police will have to rectify the public comfort level to will win their (people’s) trust,” he said.

The governor pointed out that there were complaints about problems like corruption, attitude and registration of FIRs.

People question as to what was the use of registering FIRs for an issue would get prolonged and difficult if the police were approached, he said, and directed that such issues should be resolved with full attention and behaviour. Only then would the confidence of people in the police be restored.

He directed the authorities to determine the targets and priorities to carry relief to the lowest level and thus restore the confidence of people.

He said implementation of priorities and attainment of targets should be binding for every cop.

The governor directed that police impression regarding encroachments, gambling and betting dens would also have to be improved.

He referred to gambling dens and said these cast ruining affects on society particularly in poor localities. These particularly affected the unemployed youth besides menacing the social and economic environment.

The governor directed that housing units for police should be improved and in this regard a comprehensive planning be done.—APP
