KARACHI: The administrator of District Municipal Corporation-South on Thursday passed the Rs5.98 billion surplus budget for the financial year 2022-23.

According to the budget document, total expenditures during the next financial years include Rs3.69bn allocated for salaries of employees; Rs1.25bn for development works in the district; Rs340 million for contingencies and Rs548.5m for repair and maintenance work.

The district also earmarked Rs12.5m for any calamities and environmental protection.

The DMC-South expects to generate Rs650.6m from own resources in the next financial year while the provincial government will give Rs4.82bn.

Besides, it has earmarked Rs130m for payment in dues.

Speaking at the budget session, DMC-South Administrator Dr Afshan Rubab said that the municipality had a very distinct status as it was the most sensitive district of Karachi.

“The DMC-South is the backbone of the province where not only people from within the city but also from all over the province visit on a daily basis in connection with their jobs and other important assignments.”

She said officials and staff of the municipality worked round the clock to cater to the needs of the people and because of this it faced more expenses than expected.

“But despite all these odds, this district, due to a well-devised strategy and cooperation and hard work of its officials and staff, has been leading other districts in terms of performance,” she claimed.

“Working on the directives of the Sindh government, DMC-South has achieved the target of Rs470 million income recovery, which is a record,” she said and added that at the same, it also saved a significant amount to the tune of Rs310m by overcoming and controlling non-development budget.
