THE water shortage in Sindh is getting worse by the day, with poor people bearing the brunt of it. Several herds of cattle have died of thirst and thousands of acres have turned barren due to water scarcity. Some hapless farmers have resorted to taking their own lives to end their misery.

But all this is apparently not enough for the government to take notice of the ground reality.

The provincial administration claims that water shortage is a nationwide problem and is not limited to Sindh. However, one fails to understand that if this is true, how is it that in areas where the influential people have their fields and farms there is always sufficient water.

It is an extreme injustice that water shortage only affects small-time farmers in the province. The government must give people their due share of water without any discrimination so that they may at least make ends meet in the face of rising inflation.
