Polarisation is not a new phenomenon in the country, but it has reached precarious levels in recent times. We have seen divisions along all possible lines, but the opposition’s recent tactic to pitch people against each other on the basis of the provinces they belong to is something new. The seeds of hatred will only produce more hatred. We should all keep our vested interests aside when it comes to matters of state and nationhood.

POLITICAL ANARCHY: A private education board was scheduled to conduct matric exams that had to be called off at the eleventh hour owing to the opposition’s long march. The ensuing chaos has affected just about everything in every sector across the country. Our education system is already plagued by a plethora of issues, and political anarchy is bound to cause further trouble. Protests should be kept away from the cities to prevent them from interrupting daily life and educational activities. We are living in uncertain times. Only timely decisions will stop further damage to our institutions.

VICTIM BLAMING: Last year, when a woman was gang-raped on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway, she was criticised by senior police officials for travelling alone at night without any male family member. Now, when a minor girl has been gang-raped at gunpoint in front of her family in Kasur, can those police officials explain what did she do wrong? Unfortunately, such excuses peddled by senior police officials indicate nothing but deep-rooted patriarchal mindsets.

CORRUPTION: The Gorakh hill station, also called the Murree of Sindh, is known for its pleasant weather and natural beauty. However, it is a pity that the only hill station in the province remains underdeveloped despite the allocation of millions of rupees in funds. The authorities should look into all the affairs related to the hill station to ensure that embezzlement of funds is not the reason behind the current situation.
