Assurance of free treatment

PESHAWAR, Dec 2: NWFP Health Minister Inayatullah Khan has said that the government will provide free treatment to people who suffered serious injuries in the earthquake and were admitted to teaching hospitals of the province. He was presiding over a meeting held to review relief activities in the quake-hit areas and discuss strategy to restore the health infrastructure there, said a handout on Friday.

The minister said that only those offers by donors would be accepted that were in accordance with standards set by the UN.

Emphasizing the need for improving coordination in carrying out relief activities, he said the coordination committee would hold its meetings every fortnightly so that the momentum of work could be maintained.

He asked the authorities of the teaching hospitals to provide treatment to the quake victims on a priority basis.

The meeting was informed that 450 tents, 4,000 blankets and 50 generators were recently provided to the authorities of the concerned districts to establish need-based health facilities.

Donors interested in rehabilitation of health facilities were advised to contact the concerned EDOs and the Earthquake Rehabilitation Authority.

Representatives of the WHO, Save the Children, UNFPA, executive district officers of affected districts, and chief executives of the Lady Reading Hospital and Hayatabad Medical complex attended the meting.
