HARIPUR, Dec 2: The district government has planned to settle over 10,000 quake victims in a tent village near Tarbela Lake. Turkish Red Crescent Society (RCS), UNHCR, Unicef and RWSSP will take part in providing basic facilities at the village, according to a decision taken at a meeting held at the district council complex here on Thursday. The district nazim and representatives of donor agencies attended the meeting.

There are over 10,000 affected people, belonging to Muzaffarabad, Balakot, Kaghan, Allai, Battagram and Kala Dhaka, living in different localities of Haripur district since the Oct 8 disaster.

The donors’ representatives pledged to assist the district government in settling these people in the proposed tent village.

District nazim Yusuf Ayub Khan said that an area of about 1,100 kanals would be developed for the tent village.

He said the Turkish RCS had committed $2.6 million for providing tents, blankets, hygiene kits, polythene clinic tents and food packages for six months. The UNHCR would help in water supply, making access road to the tent village and electrification, he said, adding that Unicef would provide healthcare facilities while the RWSSP would bear the cost of sanitation and construction of bathrooms.

He said that after the initial six months the charge of the village would be handed over to the regional relief commissioner.
