MUZAFFARGARH: The School Education Department (SED) has launched a pilot project of teaching climate change at schools in south Punjab.

The project has been launched in Multan and [after a test run] would be extended to other districts of south Punjab too under the over-all supervision of Minister Dr Murad Raas.

The project entails teaching of climate change to class-VII students.

Talking to this correspondent, south Punjab SED Secretary Dr Ehtasham Anwar said Pakistan was the fifth most affected amongst more than 190 countries of the world so far as climate change was concerned.

“The best strategy to cope with the perils of climate change is to prepare a generation fully cognisant of the value of a clean and green environment and the related issues,” he said.

The secretary said at the moment climate change is being introduced as a separate module but might evolve, over the time, to a full-fledged subject.

Mr Anwar said the department has also prepared a special book over a period of one year by taking all stakeholders on board.

The book is full of colourful pictures, graphics and illustrations and revolves around the story of a young boy and girl who intend to lead by example and play their roles in spreading awareness on climate change in society. It would be taught as supplementary material after securing permission in the prescribed manner.
