HYDERABAD, Nov 30: The standing committee of the Awami Tehrik has criticize the convening of a meeting by the government to decide about construction of Kalabagh and other dams.

The committee at a meeting held here on Tuesday said that any decision about a dam on the River Indus would be considered an attack on the unity and solidarity of the country.

The meeting observed that it had been proved that the dam site was located on the fault line and a quake could destroy the irrigation system of Sindh.

It decided to hold an all-parties conference in Hyderabad on Dec 6 against the proposed construction of dams on the Indus.

Rasool Bux Palijo presided over the meeting.

STPP: Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi has said President Gen Pervez Musharraf has no right to decide about construction of the Kalabagh dam because the project has been opposed by three federating units.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, he warned that if such a decision was taken, the people of Sindh would resist the move.

He wondered why Gen Musharraf who claimed to be a Sindhi could not foresee destruction in Sindh if the dam was built.

He pointed out that politicians, intellectuals, irrigation and technical experts, growers and people from all walks of life in Sindh had rejected the dam.

He warned the Sindh government that if it accepted the Kalabagh dam, it would face a strong resistance by people.
