GUJRAT: An under-trial murder suspect sustained bullet injuries in police custody as an armed rival man attacked him at Gujrat Judicial Complex on Monday.

Police said Husnain Safdar of Jhang district was arrested on charge of killing a youth of Mekan village of Daulat Nagar police in May 2021 and the murder trial was under way at a Gujrat court.

On Monday, the police had brought the accused for a hearing where the suspect, namely Umar of Sargodha, opened fire at Safdar and left him injured. The attacker was overpowered by the police while the injured was shifted to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital (ABSTH) where his condition was stated to be out of danger.

The police lodged a case against Umar and started an investigation. They said Husnain had killed a close relative of Umar in Sargodha.
