LAHORE: Baloch Council activists on Wednesday ended their sit-in outside the office of the vice chancellor of the Punjab University.

The council activists were holding a sit-in outside the VC office to demand hostel allotments for more than 25 newly enrolled students from Balochistan on quota.

The students had spent their last night in the open and were pressing that the university administration should accept their demands. However, VC Prof Niaz Ahmed Akhtar approached the students and assured them of the provision of residence on the campus.

The students ended their sit-in and dispersed peacefully.

Baloch Council General Secretary Sheraz Bugti told Dawn that the administration had assured them of providing them with residence on the campus and they would have ended the sit-in.

A spokesperson for the PU said the administration would have to make special arrangements for allotments of the students on quota. He said they would sort out the matter in a week or so and had assured the students about providing them rooms in the hostels.

He said the administration had asked MPhil and PhD students to vacate their hostel rooms as their course work was completed and they were only to submit their thesis.
