KARACHI, Nov 25: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association (SPLA) on Friday observed black day at colleges of the entire province against repeated incidents of violence against teachers and to express solidarity with the teachers of the University of Karachi.

According to a SPLA office-bearer, thousands of SPLA members in Sindh observed black-day at colleges, hoisted black flags and performed their responsibilities by wearing black armbands to mark their protest against repeated incidents of violence against teachers in Karachi.

Teachers of the D.J. Sindh Government Science College, University of Karachi and Govt. Premier College, North Nazimabad, were manhandled by activists of a political organization, compelling teachers of the KU and other educational institutes to initiate protest against the violence.

The SPLA office-bearer said that protest meetings were held at all divisional headquarters including Karachi, Hyderbad and Sukkur, where protest resolutions were adopted against violence against teachers and the government was asked to take steps for curbing violence against teachers.

He said that despite assurances of the provincial ministers including Sindh Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui, such incidents were continuously occurring at educational institutions and rogue elements were using brutal force to compel teachers to accept their demands, which was condemnable.

“If appropriate action against these rogue elements is not taken by the provincial government within a few days, teachers would be compelled to go on indefinite strike in the entire province” he added.—PPI
