GAS LOADSHEDDING

GAS LOADSHEDDING: The ministry concerned has issued a timetable for gas provision to domestic consumers during the winter season, but the schedule is not being followed in Hub, which is the largest industrial zone in the province. The people are suffering in the absence of gas supply almost all day long. Balochistan has the highest contribution in national gas production, but it remains the most neglected in terms of supplies. The government should look into the matter.

APATHETIC STAFF: I had to take my mother to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Hyderabad for emergency treatment recently. The building was in a poor shape and the sanitation system was pathetic. No attendant was allowed to accompany the patient nor was there any seating arrangement for them on the premises. Moreover, catheterisation and angiography was done without taking consent. The authorities should train the staff to be more professional and empathetic.

WRONG PRIORITIES: The government’s decision to grant $63 million aid to Afghanistan for improving its education system is indeed a smart diplomatic move which will be praised globally. But the government should not turn a blind eye to the education system at home which surely requires its attention far more urgently than does Afghanistan. Providing education to the citizens is certainly more important than scoring diplomatic points.

PUNISH THE CULPRITS: The recent tragedy in Murree has shown us again who we are as a society. The suggestion put forward in the article ‘Lessons of Murree’ (Jan 11) sounds sensible and could have spared much national sorrow had they been in place and followed. I might add that those who exploited the tourists and added to their woes should be given exemplary punishments that may act as deterrence.
