PESHAWAR, Nov 23: The Awami National Party has demanded release of tribal elder and political activist Fazl Hameed arrested by the authorities in the North Waziristan Agency. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, party provincial general secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the agency’s political administration had arrested Mr Hameed about six month ago without any reason.

He said the detained leader was a veteran human rights worker and had been struggling for the civil rights of the people of the Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata) for the five decades.

The statement said MR Hameed, hailing from Mirali tehsil of the North Waziristan Agency, had been arrested under the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR), but the authorities concerned had failed to produce him in any court of law.

Mian Iftikhar warned that the government should release the tribal alder immediately, otherwise his “illegal” detention would be challenged in the court.
