KARACHI: City Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday said that the Sindh Local Government Act 2021 was not a ‘sacred’ document that could not be changed.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of redevelopment of the Kakri Sports Complex under the Karachi Neighbourhood Development Project, he said that the provincial government was in contact with all political parties including the Jamaat-i-Islami, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, Awami National Party and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam for improvement in the LG law.

Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, MPA Shazia Singar, Senator Yousuf Baloch, PPP leaders Javed Nagori, Khalil Hoti, Karamullah Waqasi, Najmi Alam, Nazir Memon, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Managing Director Asadullah Khan and others were also present.

Administrator performs groundbreaking of new sports complex in Lyari

The administrator, who is also the spokesperson for the provincial government as well as chief minister’s law adviser, said that the Karachi mayor had been given more powers in the new LG law as he would be in charge of 10 to 12 departments.

Barrister Wahab said that the PPP had fulfilled another promise as earlier it had constructed People’s Square on Burnes Road under and now four more big projects were being executed.

He said that Kakri Ground, where the wedding ceremony of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was held, had a historic status and was a very important place for those who loved sport.

“Now a modern-day football stadium, gymnasium, open public space are being built at Kakri Ground and these sports complexes will be completed in the next one year,” he added.

The administrator said that the redevelopment of the Kakri Sports Complex was a gift for the people of Lyari on the occasion of the birth anniversary of late former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

“Lyari is the stronghold of PPP and known for its sports as it leads in football, boxing, cycling,” he added.

The administrator said that the provincial government was going to launch the Boat Basin food street, four parks in the adjoining areas, Sherpao Ground in Malir and a project in Kharadar.

He said that the construction of Malir Kala Board road was ordered by the chief minister and work on it was also going to start soon.

He claimed that no one had served the city and fulfilled their promises except the PPP government, adding that the work was being done across the province according to Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision.
