SUKKUR: A tribal court (Jirga) presided over by Pakistan Peoples Party leader Mir Munzoor Ali Panhwar in Adam Khan Panhwar village on Friday ordered a man to pay a fine of Rs3 million for killing a pregnant woman and another Rs500,000 for the loss of her unborn baby.

The man, Asad Brohi, had shot dead the woman, Arifa Abro, mistaking her of being his sister-in-law, “for honour” while she was riding a tri-wheeler to reach Tekandi Bagh within the jurisdiction of the Civil Lines police station of Jacobabad on March 24, the Jirga was told. The murder caused an enmity between the Brohi and Abro communities of the area and triggered a series of attacks and counter-attacks in the following months. The alleged killer was arrested on the spot and eventually sent to jail.

The matter was finally taken to the Jirga, which heard both sides and issued its ruling.
