MULTAN: Elections for student councils in elementary, high and higher secondary schools in south Punjab were held on Wednesday.

As many as 1,132,025 students from Class 6 and above voted to elect their representatives for 4,756 school councils out of which 2,308 councils were of high schools and 2,448 of middle schools.

South Punjab Secretary Education Dr Ehtasham Anwar told Dawn only those students were eligible to contest the election who had secured top three positions in the last annual exams.

Under this rare initiative, elected representatives are required to become role models for other students by exhibiting exemplary discipline, performance, conduct and character besides arranging co-curricular activities such as Bazm-i-Adab, speech/debate, poetry, essay writing, painting.

He said in normal circumstances the elections would be held immediately after the summer vacation and schedule would be announced at least 10 days in advance. This year, he said, the elections were delayed due to Covid-19.
