KARACHI IN DISTRESS: It is ironic that Karachi generates the most revenue for the country, but remains deprived of even the basic infrastructure. Unfortunately, nobody wants to own the city and work to facilitate the life of its citizens. It is the responsibility of every tier of governance to provide basic necessities to the people. If Karachi continues to suffer like this, its effects will be felt across the country as it is Pakistan’s premier industrial and financial centre.

CRIMINOLOGISTS: I did my master’s in Criminology in 2020, but am still waiting to get a job related to my field. Criminologists deal with crimes and criminals. Instead of utilising their expertise, the government has not created any opportunities for them in the relevant departments dealing with crimes and investigations, including financial crimes. If that is not the intention, what is the point of offering the discipline at the university level?

BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION: I am a senior citizen aged 75 years. I went to a bank for my biometric verification to draw my pension, but despite repeated attempts, the machine could not read my thumb or finger impression. This happens with most people aged 55 years and above. Some alternative method needs to be introduced for senior citizens and those whose finger-prints are not captured by the machine.

UNWANTED POLICY: A cellular company has recently introduced a new loan policy for its customers. Previously, it was offering a loan of Rs25 with charges of Rs3.5 plus tax deducted on the next recharge. Now it is offering a loan of Rs15 with charges and tax having remained unchanged. The customers can now use the new offer twice, which most customers do without realising that the company is now enjoying double the charges. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) should monitor the cellular companies closely.
