ABBOTTABAD: Forty inmates of the Abbottabad jail got remission in their prison terms after they successfully learnt how to read the Holy Quran.

The prisoners were awarded certificates and gifts besides two years reduction in their prison terms during a ceremony held on the jail premises.

They successfully learnt how to read the Holy Quran and also completed its translation, said jail officials.

The certificate distribution ceremony was attended by religious scholars, government officials and inmates of the jail.

Jail superintendent Waseem Khan, while speaking at the ceremony, told the participants that the prisoners had started learning Holy Quran with translation a year ago. He said the prison staff and reputed religious teachers provided their services to the inmates in learning the holy book.

Deputy superintendent Rashid Khan and assistant superintendent Zain Shah informed the participants about other steps taken by the jail administration for welfare and reformation of prisoners.

Religious scholar Maulana Mehmoodul Hassan urged the prisoners to use their time in jail for seeking forgiveness for their sins, and blessings of Allah for giving them chance to become useful and respectable human beings.
