ALLAHABAD: Under the instructions from the League High Command, “peaceful non-payment” of the punitive tax amounting to Rs. 10,000 imposed by the U.P. Government on the Muslim residents of three localities of the city, was started by Allahabad Muslim league.

Mr. Ghazanfarullah, MLA (Central) gave a lead by refusing to pay his share of the fine assessed at Rs. 2,083 and quietly allowed his motor car and the entire drawing room furniture [to be] taken away to the Kotwall. Similar scenes were repeated as the police party headed by the City Magistrate slowly advanced from door-to-door, breaking houses open, which were locked or closed from within and removing property therefrom.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Lucknow,] Though the Direct Action Movement launched by All-India Muslim League will be non-violent in character, no brake will be applied if … there are bloody outbreaks in certain parts of the country. This disclosure was made to the Orient press by a prominent League leader who attended a few meetings of the Committee of Action at Delhi.

The League leader cited the example of Chauri Chaura incidents in 1922 when Mr. Gandhi wound up the whole civil disobedience movement. He stated that the League … would pursue its course unflinchingly.
