GUJRAT: A constable was killed on Wednesday and another sustained injuries in firing allegedly by a lawyer during a raid at a house in Professors Colony of Jhelum to arrest a drug dealer woman wanted by Kharian police.

Police have arrested the lawyer and his brother.

Gujrat police spokesman Asad Gujjar told Dawn that a joint team of Kharian and Jhelum civil lines police had raided a house to arrest ‘drug dealer’ Naseem alias Kubbi Pathani who had been a proclaimed offender in a case of narcotics and wanted to Kharian police.

He said as soon as police knocked at the door of the house, two men came out and opened fire, resulting in the death of constable Muhammad Ali and injuries to head constable Abdul Rasheed. He said the woman managed her escape while police overpowered both the suspects -- Abdul Haseeb advocate and his brother Abdul Sabor.

Jhelum police have registered a case against the suspects under sections 302, 324, 353, 186, 224, 225, 216 of PPC and some other sections of prohibited weapons on the report of Kharian ASI Faiz Ahmed.

The representatives of Jhelum district bar association, however, termed the incident a result of misunderstanding as the lawyer involved in the case had resorted to firing ‘in self-defence.’
