HYDERABAD, Nov 8: A spokesman for the directorate of the Agriculture Information of the Agriculture Extension, Sindh, has said that a campaign for wheat sowing has been launched to achieve the target of 2.47 million tons from an area of 900,000 hectares.

In a statement, he said that various steps already taken for guiding farmers, providing services and creating awareness were reviewed at a meeting of field officers held under the chairmanship of the director-general of the agriculture extension on Monday.

It was stated that 90 seminars were being organized in wheat-growing areas at the district and taluka levels to guide farmers.

Many taluka level seminars have been organized in early sowing areas while the rest are being organized in the current month.

The meeting was informed that a number of demonstration plots would be laid out at farmer’s fields for practical dissemination of various components of improved wheat production technology.

It was informed that a service of cleaning and grading wheat seed had also been launched under which seed processing plants in Sakrand, Kot Diji, Tandojam, Ghotki and mobile seed grading floats were providing service to farmers at their door steps.

The meeting decided that in order to boost awareness campaign about wheat crop, mobile film van would exhibit film of wheat production technology in about 80 villages.

Moreover, messages for wheat will be broadcast through electronic media also.

It was decided that the directors of upper Sindh, training, crops and plant protection would monitor the grow- more-campaign in various areas of the province.

It was decided to undertake strict vigilance on the sale of substandard fertilizer and pesticides and field officers were directed to immediately file FIR against the person, whose sample was found unfit.

Meanwhile, the provincial secretary agriculture ordered suspension of the agriculture officer and field assistant Deh Teg of the Ubauro taluka of the Ghotki district for not providing extension service to farmers of the area.

The action has been taken on a complaint received in the special complaints cell by the agriculture department at Karachi.

The farmers informed that the office of the field assistant had been illegally occupied by the local SHO.

In response to another complaint of the growers of Tando Mohammad Khan that traders were not giving correct prices of their fodder crop produce, the secretary directed that the market committees be activated to protect the rights of growers and resolve such problems.

MUET: The Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro has decided to propose modifications in the curricula and research programme of graduate and postgraduate studies in all disciplines.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the faculty members of the university held here on Tuesday.

Vice-Chancellor Dr.A.Q.K Ra-jput was in the chair.

The vice-chancellor told the faculty members that Prof (Dr) McLernon, director of the Postgraduate Studies University of Leeds, UK, is arriving at the Mehran university on November 12, under the linkage agreement between Mehran University and Leeds University.

He will be staying for one week at the university and during his stay he will meet faculty members and students and propose modifications in curricula and research programme of graduate and postgraduate studies in all disciplines of the University.

He will also offer split Ph.D programme for teachers and students.

The meeting was attended by all deans, directors and registrar.
