MARDAN: Unidentified assailants gunned down a police officer in Takhtbai tehsil, police said here on Friday.

The officials said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shah Faisal along with police personnel was on a routine checking in Chiraghdin area when three persons riding a motorcycle opened fire over the police officials when they asked them to stop for checking. The officials said as a result of firing, ASI Faisal died instantly as he received bullets in his face, while the other personnel remained unhurt.

The attackers escaped the scene after the attack.

Later, a contingent of police rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to arrest the killers.

The police registered an FIR against unknown killers.
