KHYBER: Customs staff recovered arms and ammunition from a vehicle bringing soapstone from Afghanistan at the Torkham border here on Friday.

The officials said the seizure was made at the import terminal during routine checking of items. They said driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and investigations were started to ascertain who was behind sending the arms from across the boundary.

The seized arms included M-4 rifles, pistols, magazines, binoculars and other parts used in manufacturing firearms.

The officials said that they had further intensified the checking of vehicles coming from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, an explosion of minor intensity took place outside the house of two customs clearing agents in Bacha Maina residential compound near the Torkham border.

The police said that the explosion caused no damage to the house, adding they had registered a case and started investigations.
