SWABI: A total of 476 students were awarded degrees in the 25th convocation of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology held here on Thursday.
Provincial finance minister Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, who was the chief guest, awarded the degrees to the students.
The ceremony was attended by academicians, experts, politicians, and parents from across the country.
Executive Director of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan Shakil Durrani was also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jhagra, who is also an alumnus of the GIK Institute and grandson of its founder and former president late Ghulam Ishaq Khan, said: “Whatever field the students choose in their practical lives they should concentrate on it wholeheartedly for betterment of the society.”
In his address, acting Rector Aminullah Khan highlighted the achievements of the GIK Institute in academia and research fields and its unique place in multinational and national companies across the world.
Pro-Rector Academics Prof Wasim Ahmad Khan said: “The secret of survival in the competitive new Century of Pandemic lies in acquiring, generating, accumulating, sharing, and using knowledge for progress and development with new style.”
Of the successful graduates in the BS programme, 49 were from the faculty of computer engineering, 38 computer science, 59 electrical engineering (electronics), 35 electrical engineering (power), 21 engineering sciences, 46 each chemical engineering and materials engineering, 94 mechanical engineering, and 20 management sciences.
Fifty-nine students, who completed their MS in different disciplines of engineering, were also awarded degrees.
The PhD graduates included Madiha Tahir, Uzma, Abidullah Khan, Saadullah Khan, Arifullah, Abdul Kabir, Shahid Alam, Rahmatullah and Ihteram Ali.
The faculty-based gold medalists were Usman Farooq, Mohammad Riazul Haq, Mohammad Usman Umer, Minahil Jamshaid, Mohammad Shehryar, Huzaifa Kamran, Danyal Hakeem Jokhio, Sheikh Abdul Majid, Afifa Dilawaiz Cheema, Afaq Hussain and Abdur Rehman Anwar.
The Quaid-i-Azam Gold Medal for best overall performance in all the undergraduate programmes was won by Minnihal Tariq and Ghulam Ishaq Khan Gold Medal for best academic performance in all undergraduate programmes went to Sheikh Abdul Majid.
Earlier, President Dr Arif Alvi, who is Chancellor of GIK Institute, had awarded degrees to the gold medalists and PhD graduates at a function held at the President House in Islamabad on Wednesday.
