KARACHI: A prayer leader was shot dead near his mosque while resisting a robbery attempt on Tuesday, police said.

They said 40-year-old Mufti Nida Mohammad was intercepted by armed riders seconds after he stepped out of his Jama Masjid Al Aziz in Maula Goth within the remit of the Gulshan-i-Maymar police station.

“One of the riders pulled out a gun and demanded cash and valuables,” said an official. “While returning from the scene after the robbery, one of the bandits was overpowered by Mufti Nida. As the scuffle began between the two, the other bandit fired a shot targeting Mufti Nida and one of the bullets hit him in the head. He died on the spot and the robbers sped away. The body of the victim was later moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.”
