QUETTA: The newly-appointed judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, has said that the role of lawyers is very important in establishment of a justice-based society and it is the responsibility of the judges to provide justice to the people according to their oath.

“The powers of every institution have been defined in the Constitution and each institution should work within its jurisdiction. Provision of rights to people is the responsibility of the government. Democracy requires supremacy of the Constitution,” he said while speaking at a dinner jointly hosted by the Balochistan Bar Council, Balochistan High Court Bar Association (BHCBA) and the District Bar Association (DBA) of Quetta here on Sunday.

Chief Justice-designate of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) Justice Mohammad Naeem Afghan also spoke on the occasion.

Justice Mandokhail, who has until recently served as chief justice of BHC, said: “I am indebted to the lawyers who have honoured me and encouraged me. I am sure my brothers will not spare any effort in providing justice to the people.”

He said that the government had the responsibility to solve basic problems of the people. “Where governments fail, the number of cases of public interest increases,” he said and urged judges to provide justice to the people without any discrimination.

Justice Afghan said: “We will work with the lawyers to provide justice to the people. The lawyers should cooperate with us in timely delivery of justice. Every institution should do its job in the best possible way.”

BHCBA President Syed Basit Shah and DBA President Iqbal Kasi awarded a shield to Justice Mandokhail for his outstanding performance and delivery of justice as chief justice of the BHC.

Former presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association Ali Ahmad Kurd and Kamran Murtaza, Service Tribunal Chairman Mazhar Ilyas, senior lawyers Haji Attaullah Langove, Munir Ahmad Kakar, Hadi Shakeel Ahmed, Syed Ayaz Zahoor and others also spoke at the dinner.

The judges of the BHC and members of various tribunals were present.
