KARACHI: Personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Department on Sunday claimed to have arrested a suspected militant, said to have links with banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, for his alleged involvement in several cases including the assassination of a former lawmaker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

According to a CTD spokesperson, “the CTD carried out a successful action in Lyari’s Mirza Adam Khan Road and arrested suspect Ubaid Rehman alias Capri and recovered a hand-grenade from his possession”.

He was linked with the banned LJ and was on his way to carry out a “criminal act” when arrested, he added.

During initial questioning, the suspect disclosed his involvement in the killing of former MQM MPA Sajid Qureshi. Besides, he also disclosed killing five other people on sectarian grounds.

“The held suspect is a brother of LJ militant Asim Capri who was sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court,” the spokesperson said.

Suspect Ubaid was in touch with several militants inside jails and outside and used to get directives from them, he said, adding that he was planning assassination of important personalities in Karachi when he was arrested.

He was also arrested in the past, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, the police authorities announced a cash reward and appreciation certificates for the police party.

It may be recalled that the suspect’s brother, Asim Capri, was involved in killing of renowned qawwal Amjad Sabri.
