AS conspiracy theories continue to do the rounds, vaccine hesitancy is a real challenge as a large number of Pakistanis are still reluctant to get inoculated, mostly due to lack of awareness and education.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has undoubtedly done a commendable job by proactively taking effective measures to control Covid-19. Now for the NCOC and other relevant departments, vaccine hesitancy is another obstacle to overcome.

Several measures can be taken, including effective awareness, coordination across all departments, especially the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and district administrations, and incentivising vaccination like other countries did by giving out free vouchers.

Popular social media platforms may be asked to tackle the fake news and conspiracy theories effectively. Above all, it is important to take clerics and sports stars and celebrities into confidence and let them spread this message among their followers. Print media, local elders, and other stakeholders can also be helping hands in addressing vaccine hesitancy.

The Covid-19 threat still looms despite the declining trend of the third wave. This issue must be addressed before the fourth wave sails through. Instead of burying our heads in the sand, it is time to accept the reality, and plan things proactively. The virus cannot be defeated until and unless all of us are immune and inoculated.
