BAHAWALNAGAR: A woman suffered burns after her husband allegedly threw acid on her following an altercation over his third marriage at Toba Qalandar Shah village late on Tuesday night.

According to victim’s brother Muhammad Arif, a resident of Chak Mari Autar, his sister Yasmeen married Mazhar of Toba Qalandar Shah 10 years ago and the couple had five children. He said Mazhar contracted second marriage a few months ago without the consent of Yasmeen, which created differences between them.

He said that a few weeks ago, Mazhar contracted third marriage in Lahore and now he wanted to keep his third wife with Yasmeen at Toba Qalandar Shah. He alleged that when Yasmeen resisted and refused to accept Mazhar’s decision, he started beating and abusing her.

Yasmeen’s mother said that on the day of the incident, Mazhar first engaged in arguments with Yasmeen over the matter and then tortured her. She said he locked his children up in a room when they tried to rescue their mother after hearing her screams. After that Mazhar threw acid on his wife and fled leaving her critically injured, she added.

The family said Yasmeen was taken to the DHQ hospital where her condition was said to be critical with 60pc burns.

The DPO’s PRO said a case had been registered against Mazhar under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sections of PPC on the complaint of Arif. He said police were making efforts to arrest the suspect.
