CHITRAL: A woman gave birth to a baby boy inside an ambulance while being shifted to the district headquarters hospital here on Sunday.

A Rescue 1122 official told Dawn that the wife of Khan Badshah of Arandu village had been referred to the DHQ hospital from Civil Hospital Drosh when complications cropped up during delivery.

He said the condition of the patient improved when ambulance reached the Bakrabad village. The vehicle was parked on the roadside and the woman gave birth to a baby boy under the care of the Rescue 1122 female staff, he added.

The official said both the newborn and the mother had been admitted to the DHQ hospital, where they were in good health.

In a separate development, Chitral deputy commissioner Hasan Abid banned opening of bazaars on Saturdays and Sundays, and closed all the educational institutions till further orders. A notification issued on Sunday said that the restrictions had been imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19.
