KARACHI: A suspected bandit was killed in an alleged police encounter in Gulshan-i-Iqbal in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said.

They said a police patrol of the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police station was informed by some area people that armed motorcyclists were snatching cash and valuables from a couple of passersby in Block 3.

They said that the policemen rushed to the scene and spotted the motorcyclists off Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road. The bike riders fired shots while trying to ride away.

The police chased them and finally they found themselves trapped in one of the streets. In the exchange of gunfire one of them suffered bullet wounds and died on the spot, the officials added.

They said the other suspect, however, escaped unhurt. The deceased bandit was identified as 27-year-old Kamran Ishtiaq, who was wanted in a number of street crimes and robbery cases.

Body found

The body of a young man was found from the Malir River in the Shah Latif Town area.

The area police said that the body was spotted by some passersby, who informed the police.

“The body was found off Murghi Khana bus stop,” said an official. “There were multiple marks of torture and several wounds which suggested that the victim was murdered.”

The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification after medico-legal formalities at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
