LONDON, Oct 15: Beeston, an English hockey league first division club in Nottingham, has recruited former Pakistan captain Mohammad Nadeem. Having won 204 caps and played in two Olympic Games and two World Cups, Nadeem is enjoying playing in England.

He said, “The people have been so friendly and welcoming and I’m very happy to be here. Hockey coaching is excellent and if I can help give something to the team, that’s great.

“I found first few days very cold but I’ve got used to it now and I appreciate what the local community has done for me.”

Nadeem is already proving to be a success, with the team winning first two games.

Graham Griffiths, first-team manager, said, “It’s like he’s been here for ever and he really has become quite a celebrity in Nottingham.

“Even when he arrived at Manchester Airport there were so many people trying to shake his hand it was impossible to find a way out. Last week we took over 200 on the gate, which is simply unheard of, and to hear all the kids chanting his name was unbelievable.”

Nadeem, 33, who captained Pakistan at the Athens Olympics here his side finished fifth, is considering a comeback after being asked by Pakistan Hockey Federation to try to earn a place in the squad for 2006 World Cup.—PPI
