SRINAGAR, Oct 15: An Indian who fled Pakistan after the earthquake razed the prison in which he was held, has been arrested in occupied Kashmir after crossing the Line of Control (LoC), an Indian army official said on Saturday.

He identified the prisoner only as Zubair, a resident of Uri district, but did not reveal his crimes.

Luck deserted him after he crossed the LoC and reached his quake-ravaged home town on Thursday.

“Our soldiers handed him to the police and he is now in custody,” the official said.

“If the bloke had remained quiet then no one would have known, but Zubair made a song and dance about his jailbreak after reaching Uri.”

Zubair was incarcerated at Muzaffarabad, which is 70 kilometres from Uri.

He told police he escaped after the Oct 8 tremor flattened the jail. It was unclear how long Zubair would remain in detention. —AFP
