KOHAT: Women showcased their handcrafts at a one-day exhibition held here on Friday.

The local technical and vocational centre and Aid for Uprooted People in Pakistan, a private entity, organised the ‘Hunarmand Mela’.

Director Academics Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Technical Education and Vocational Education Authority Mohammad Sadiq Orakzai inaugurated the show.

Hand-sewed and unstitched clothes, handmade products like baskets, bread boxes and floor sheets, items for wedding ceremonies and mehndi made from a local shrub mazri, rolling pins and wooden boards were put on display.

On the occasion, Mr Orakzai said equipping women and girls with the skills of making handcrafts was need of the hour for uplift of the society. He said earning from handmade products was most respectful and honest job.

Mr Orakzai said the exhibition was organised with an aim to promote traditional skills of craftswomen. He distributed prizes among the girls and women.

GARBAGE HEAPS: The residents of Model Town City, Jarwanda, have demanded resolution of the jurisdictional dispute among the cantonment board, the tehsil municipal administration and the Water Supply and Sanitation Company to rid them of heaps of garbage and broken drains in the area.

Speaking at a meeting on Friday, they said the cantonment board was not ready to take the area into its jurisdiction because of its many problems, while the TMA was totally oblivious of its responsibilities.

They also called on WSSC to place dustbins like other parts as cleanliness of the city areas was its duty.

They appealed to the deputy commissioner to resolve the jurisdictional issue.

REGISTRATION OF SPECIAL PERSONS: The district administration has constituted a board for registration of special persons to avail government facilities under one-window operation.

A statement issued on Friday from the office of social welfare officer Mohammad Hussain Khattak said the director social welfare, special education and women empowerment, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had directed deputy commissioner Abdur Rehman to set up a board to look into the needs of the persons with disabilities.

Problems like issuance of special identity cards, wheelchairs, yearly stipend, free treatment, education and free pick and drop service would be recommended by the board.

The statement said the board would meet on the first and last Wednesdays of each month to register the special persons.
