HYDERABAD, Oct 12: A modern slaughterhouse, set up at a cost of Rs47.98 million with financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank, will be made operational by November 15 to meet the meat requirement of the city.

At a meeting here on Tuesday, it was decided that the animal husbandry department would hand over possession of the slaughter house located at the cattle colony on the Tando Mohammad Khan Road to officers of the agriculture and animal husbandry of the district government on October 18 so that all facilities could be made available on time.

District Coordination Officer Mohammad Hussain Syed presided over the meeting.

The DCO said that until and unless this modern slaughterhouse having daily capacity of 300 large and 2,000 small animals on the pattern of slaughterhouses in Quetta and Lahore was made functional, the supply of hygienic meat, control on illegal slaughters in the city, improvement in cleanliness environment condition could not be ensured.

He said four acre land was provided by the defunct Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in which building of slaughterhouse was completed in 2001-02 at the cost of Rs28.08 million from the financial assistance of the ADB while the Sindh government had invested Rs19.9 million to equip the project on modern lines.

He asked the management of the provincial department of animal husbandry to provide its full technical assistance and technical training to workers of the TMA.

He said that after making the slaughter house functional, shifting of illegal slaughter houses and cattle pens from the city would be ensured.

MPA Aslam Pervaiz advocate, Animal Husbandry Director Dr Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh, TMOs of Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas, DDO coordination Mr Aijaz Hassan and office-bearers of the Meat Association Hyderabad attended the meeting.
