Parma’s winless run extended with Verona loss

VERONA: Parma extended their winless streak to 13 games in Serie A with a 2-1 loss at Hellas Verona on Monday that deepened their relegation worries.

Parma has lost nine of their past 10 league matches, drawing the other, to leave themselves second from bottom of the Serie A standings, four points from safety.

The side from Emilia-Romagna have earned just one point from their last six games under new coach Roberto D’Aversa.

Verona had lost three of their past four matches and Parma took the lead in the eighth minute when Juraj Kucka converted a penalty after Yann Karamoh had been brought down by goalkeeper Marco Silvestri.

But Verona were level just five minutes later as Parma midfielder Alberto Grassi accidently deflected a Federico Dimarco shot into his own goal.

Both sides came close to going in front before Antonin Barak scored the winner when he headed in a corner in the 61st for Verona’s 1,000th Serie A goal.

Verona consolidated ninth position, seven points off the Europa League places.—Agencies

Daniah wins SGA Ladies Golf title

KARACHI: Fast-rising golfer Daniah Syed won top honours in the third edition of Sindh Golf Association (SGA) Ladies Amateur Golf Championship here at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club (DACGC).

The talented Daniah carded an excellent final round of 76 in the two-day championship to comfortably win the Category A (handicap 0-9) gross title with an aggregate of 157.

In Category B (handicap 10-24), Tabassum Sharif (174) won the gross title ahead of Amna Amjad (182). Durdana Soomro (148) won in the net category followed by Anum Zahra (157). In category C (handicap 25-36), young Falah Zahra won the gross title with an aggregate of 198. Tanveer Maqsood was runner-up. Amna Maqsood won in the net category while Erum Naeem was runner-up.

In category D (under-14 girls), Zohra Ali won the gross title while other priz winners included Almerah Sheikh, Alina Fawaz and Mehar Maqbool.—Agencies

Black Mumba Club, KBBC, One Unit Club triumph

KARACHI: Black Mumba Club Karsaz, KBBC and One Unit Club beat their respective rivals in the ongoing Honda Atlas Power Cup basketball tournament here at the Arambagh-Abdul Nasir courts on Monday.

In the first match, KBBC beat Binoria Club 50-42 with Mahmood Danyal (18 pts) and Rajkumar Lakhwani (14 pts) being the prime scorers for the winners. They were well assisted by Kazim Abbas (12 pts).

In the second match, Black Mumba Club outplayed Arambagh Club 46-36 wwith Hasan Ali Sr (14 pts), Mohammad Behzad Rana (14 pts) leading the way for the winners. Danish Iqbal also scored 10 pts.

In the last match of the day, One Unit Club crushed Bahria Club 58-49. Talal Ahmed (18 pts) was unstoppable for the winners with three-pointer scores.

Earlier, the Karachi Basketball Association officials and other sportspersons present on the the court prayed for complete recovery and well being of former hockey captain and Olympian Islahuddin Siddiqui and international basketball player Abdul Nasir, both of whom have been hospitalised due to coronavirus.—Agencies

Olympian Arshad Malik is no more

LAHORE: Arshad Malik, Pakistan’s gold medallist weightlifter, passed away in Gujranwala on Monday. He was 72.

Arshad’s nephew Sajjad said that his uncle had been ill for the last six years.

Arshad won gold medal at the 1976 Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Bangkok. He also competed at the 1972 Munich Olympics and the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh condoled the death of Arshad on Tuesday.—Sports Reporter
