KARACHI: Nikah of Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari — daughter of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and former president Asif Ali Zardari — with Mahmood Chaudhry, the son of a US-based businessman, was held on Friday.

The simple ceremony was held in Bilawal House where detailed security arrangements of Sindh police were in place allowing entry to guests only after thorough checks.

“Nikah has been performed by Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Soho,” said a source privy to details of the private ceremony.

“The groom with his family and guests arrived at Bilawal House in a convoy of over 15 vehicles a little before sunset. The ceremony was simple and restricted to the people close to the family and a few from Pakistan Peoples Party considering the Covid-19 precautions.”

He said a heavy contingent of the Special Security Unit of the Sindh police was deputed for security of the event.

Armed personnel of the unit were also deployed over roofs of the adjoining buildings in the neighbourhood to keep an eye on the traffic and people’s movement in the area.

“The functions related to the marriage celebrations started on Jan 24 with Mehfil-i-Milad and a mehndi ceremony took place on 27th,” said sources.

“The function of baraat would take place on Saturday where some 300 guests are expected to attend the ceremony.”
