RAWALPINDI: To promote cycling in the garrison city, Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) will earmark cycling lanes on main roads of the city to the tune of Rs120 million.

A senior RDA official told Dawn that the project will be completed in three phases and three routes have been allocated for cycling lanes on main roads. He said for phase-I, Rs120 million has been allocated, adding: “In this phase, the 5 ft cycling lane will be earmarked on Airport Road from Karal chowk to Ammar Chowk. Total length of the lane will be 5 kilometres.”

In phase-II, the lane will be developed from Ammar Chowk to Chaklala Scheme-III and Jinnah Park, extending to Golf Club and Ayub Park play land whereas in the third phase, lane marking will be done from Fauji Foundation Hospital to Jinnah Park and Ammar Chowk.

He said rubber lane dividers, lane marking and installation of sign boards have been included in the project, adding the project will be completed in three months.

When contacted, RDA Chief Engineer Amir Rasheed said the project had been approved and will launch soon. He said the aim of the project is to promote cycling in the city. Lanes will ensure safety for people.

He said RDA will launch improvement of Katcheri Chowk and Defence remodeling while during construction of Ammar Chowk, it will make sure that cycling lanes are earmarked.

This will promote healthy activities in the garrison city, he added.
