LAHORE: An eight-event card, featuring one cup race, has been laid out for the 19th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

The main event, the January Cup, a class VI handicap race to be gone over 1,100 metres has 11 runners. Of whom three look to be the real contenders, if the handicap and recent performance is any yardstick to pick up the winner. Fillies Marmaris and Amazing Lips and horse Pocket all seem just as pretenders. Four-year-old filly Marmaris has already won five races and placed at top of the weight with nine stones and four pounds and looks to be in good chance while five-year-old Pockets is a speedy thoroughbred horse to equally match the strides of Marmaris. Four-year-old filly Amazing Lips is also a good speedster and has a handicap advantage over the two carrying eight stones and four pounds.

Two other races besides the cup race has been drawn up for the thoroughbreds. The Yasoob Plate Class VII Division I to be contested over 1,200 metres has eight runners. It looks to be an open affair as nearly half-a-dozen runners are on chance.

The Yasoob Plate Class VII Division II over 1,200 metres has a big field of 14 runners, of whom a quartet is in with an equal chance — Warrior’s Charge, Banaras Prince, Dazzling and Danzora.

Warrior’s Charge and Banaras Prince look better placed in the handicap. A keen contest is expected in races drawn for the day’s card to present race fans a fun of exciting and close finishes.

In all, 77 horses are taking part in day’s card. Five races will be contested over 1,000 metres, one over 1,100 metres and two over 1,200 metres with the opening race to be held at 12:00noon.
