ISLAMABAD: The British American Tobacco (BAT) has decided to move its shared services operations from Malaysia to Pakistan, Commerce Adviser Razak Dawood announced in a consultative meeting on services exports on Tuesday.

The adviser informed the meeting, held at the Ministry of Commerce, that BAT’s decision was an indication that Pakistan was now being considered as a cost effective location for activities including back office services, business process outsourcing (BPO), call centres, etc. This is a major development and it is hoped that other multinationals will follow suit, he said. The adviser reiterated the importance of these services and informed the participants that Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC), a subsidiary of BAT, had been competing for the latter’s ‘Global Business Services’ to be setup in the country.
