McGrath for specialist coaches

Published October 3, 2005

MELBOURNE, Oct 2: Paceman Glenn McGrath on Sunday supported calls for specialist coaches for the Australian team in the wake of their Ashes loss last month to England.

Cricket Australia is reviewing the national set-up after relinquishing the Ashes and there is speculation about the future of head coach John Buchanan.

McGrath said Australia would soon emulate England’s set-up, with players having access to specialist coaches in a range of areas.

“You look at all the big professional teams around the world and they’ve got every base covered,” McGrath said.

“If we want to become more professional as a unit, I feel that is the way we will go. It’s only a matter of time before that comes in.”

Fellow Test fast bowler Brett Lee supported Buchanan, while batsman Damien Martyn said it would be wrong to blame the head coach for everything that went wrong in England.

Martyn, dropped from the team for this month’s Test against a World XI after a poor Ashes series, said: “The blame can’t be solely on anyone, because most of us didn’t do well.

“I wouldn’t just blame him (Buchanan) and I wouldn’t just blame one player.

“Our game wasn’t quite what we wanted, it was frustrating for us ...nothing sort of clicked from a team point of view and an individual point of view.”—AFP
