KARACHI: The city’s weather conditions, influenced by a high pressure area over Central Asia, made the temperature hit the 40.2 degree Celsius mark on Monday.

The relative humidity recorded was 20 per cent.

According to the Met department, the heatwave is likely to prevail in the city for a week.

“A high pressure area formed over Central Asia is inducing wind flow from north to northwest over Sindh including Karachi. Under its influence, a heatwave is likely to prevail over Karachi over the next five to seven days with day temperatures rising to 40-42C. The wind flow is mainly to be from north to northwest during the period,” says a Met department alert.

It requested authorities concerned to take necessary measures while advising people to take precautions, especially avoiding sun exposure between 11am and 4pm, the peak warm hours.

Meanwhile, K-Electric in a statement urged consumers to ensure energy conservation during the heatwave.

“As power demand is likely to escalate, the power utility is in contact with its fuel suppliers to ensure consistent supplies. At the same time, it appeals to its customers to consume electricity mindfully and practice energy conservation.

“The power utility has ensured that its rapid response teams remain on high alert during this time to ensure swiftest possible restoration of any faults, while also ... deferring any non-vital maintenance shutdowns during this time,” a spokesperson said.
