HYDERABAD, Sept 26: Leader of Opposition in Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro has called for making the A.G.N. Abbasi technical committee report on water reservoirs public.

He was speaking to journalists at the residence of MPA Zahid Ali Bhurgari on Monday.

PPP leaders Khurshid Junejo and Fayyaz Shah were present on the occasion.

Mr Khuhro had come to the city to inquire after the health of injured of two major road accidents on the Indus Highway.

He said the PPP had not changed its stance on water reservoirs and construction of dams regardless of recent statement of the World Bank on funding for construction of big dams in Pakistan.

He said the Abbasi report be made public as soon as possible irrespective of the fact that it was for or against the dams.

He said if the report was classified, the people would be justified to think that it was an attempt of the government to protect vested interests.

He expressed grief over road accidents on the Indus Highway and questioned road safety measures for travellers.

He said the Sindh chief minister had announced Rs100,000 compensation for the deceased but nothing had been done to lessen ratio of such road accidents.

He said conditions in government-run hospitals were not hidden from anyone.

He said in developed countries there were measures which saved lives of road accident victims but in Sindh or else where in the country roads remained unsafe for passengers.

He sarcastically said the government was trumpeting about earning huge foreign exchange reserves and accumulating billions of dollars but no body knew what amount had been spent on the safety of people.

Mr Khuhro questioned writ of the National Highway Authority on the ground that it controlled the Indus Highway but was doing nothing for introducing safety measures.

He said there were no proper lighting arrangements on the highways.

He asked the government as to what had been done for protecting lives of injured after they were shifted to hospitals.

He said the NHA’s working remained ineffective in Sindh as compare to Punjab.

He said for the third phase of local body polls, the government had made arrangements for ‘transparent rigging’.

He said the Sindh chief minister had already declared that government-backed candidates would be elected from district governments in 22 districts.
