JERUSALEM: Jews and Arabs in Palestine waiting tensely for the British Govt’s decision on the future of the narrow strip of land on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean today [Sept 28] heard the first rumble of a gathering storm when a British policeman was shot in a crowded Tel Aviv street and an explosion went off nearby at the same time. The shooting occurred this morning at the Central Post Office of the predominantly Jewish city of Tel Aviv, when British constable K. Berry acting as an escort during the transport of cash was attacked by two unidentified young men. …When he resisted, one of the young men drew a revolver and fired three shots hitting Berry every time. He died instantly. A force of parachute troops from the British Eighth Army has arrived in Palestine from Europe, it was reported today. …Political tension has been reported to be increasing over the imminent end of Jewish migration …

An increasingly critical situation in Palestine is indicated.... The Zionist Conference has affirmed that Palestine Jewry was determined to oppose ‘with all its might’ the policy of the British White Paper of 1939, limiting migration.
