ISLAMABAD: A bank officer was assassinated in broad daylight in the federal capital on Thursday.

Syed Raza Naqvi, 32, a resident of Garden Town, was the area sales manager of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Gulberg branch, police said.

Mr Naqvi was dropped by his brother outside the bank branch in the morning.

As he was climbing the stairs of the building, two men riding a motorcycle pulled up and the pillion rider shot him.

As a result, he fell and the attacker fired a couple of more shots at him and escaped, the police said.

People from the nearby areas as well as his brother reached the spot and shifted

him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Koral police registered a murder case in response to a complaint lodged by the deceased’s brother Syed Aziz Naqvi against unidentified persons.

Police officers on condition of anonymity told Dawn that the victim had survived an attempt on his life on May 20 in Garden Town.

Over the incident, a case was registered with the Khanna police against unidentified people.

Later, he nominated a man in the case in his supplementary statement, said the police, adding the attempt on his life in May was made over a dispute.

But the police officers did not give details about the nature of the dispute and identification of the attacker.

The man nominated by the victim in the attempted murder case was identified, the officers said.

The investigators are tracing his whereabouts to arrest him for investigation in connection with both the cases, they added.

It is suspected that those involved in the May 20 attack might have assassinated him, the officers said.

The investigators obtained footage of the incident captured from a CCTV camera installed near the crime scene.

The footage suggested that the attackers were laying in wait for the victim.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan constituted two special investigation teams under the supervision of DIG operations Waqaruddin Syed, said the police.

Each team is headed by SP

Counter-Terrorism Department Dr Syed Mustafa Tanveer and SP Rural Zone Farooq Amjad.

The CTD investigation team will collect evidence on technical ground while the other will gather human intelligence and interrogate suspects.

The teams will also collect CCTV footage from the area as well as on the possible routes of the attackers.
