LAHORE: Preparations are in full swing for a province-wide talent hunt by the Punjab Council of Arts that will feature competitions in music, short story writing, short films, visual arts and craft.

Punjab Council of the Arts Operations Director Ibrar Alam told Dawn that Rs44 million had been approved for the project, which was aimed at introducing new talent in different fields of art.

The talent hunt would begin early next month and winners of various competitions would be awarded cash prizes, certificates and shields.

The objective of the project was to search for young talent at district, divisional and provincial levels for the promotion of art and culture; encourage top performers through prizes; develop a competitive spirit among the youth; present a soft image of the country; and develop a culture of tolerance and peace among people.

Mr Alam said that in 2016-17, a Talent Hunt Programme had been launched to scour young talent in music, fine arts and crafts. Competitions had been held at the district, divisional and provincial levels to encourage students and provide educational entertainment to people through mega shows.

Based on the feedback from the youth and stakeholders, it was decided to launch another edition of the programme, he added.

The top performers will be invited to perform in shows organised by the divisional arts councils. Each topper from there would participate in the provincial grand finale.

The music competition would consist of singing and instrumental categories. Participants will have a choice between singing traditional folk songs, Sufi poetry and Pakistani songs. Instrumental music competitions will also focus on rhythms of the same genres.

In crafts, divisional arts councils will register the emerging and dying craftsmen/artisans from across Punjab.

After preliminary scrutiny, melas would be organised at all divisional arts councils to provide an opportunity to artisans to market their items. Finally, at a grand three-day mela in Lahore, top three winners will be awarded with cash prizes.

In the literature category, short story and ghazal/poetry competitions will be held. Short film competitions will also be held at divisional arts councils.
