ISLAMABAD: The Excise and Taxation Office (ETO) has introduced a new mechanism for registration of new vehicles within the premises of showrooms, Dawn has learnt.

Excise Director Bilal Azam told Dawn that the mechanism was introduced so residents of the city could get new vehicles registered within the premises of the showrooms.

Through the mechanism, a vehicle will get registered before it is driven, he added.

In this regard, a meeting was held with representatives of showrooms to finalise the strategy and put the initiative in place, he said, adding that there are 10 showrooms of a local manufacturer, three of Toyota Corolla, two each of Suzuki, Honda and Faw, and one of Kia.

During the meeting, it was decided that the department will establish a desk at each showroom and online service will be provided, to link it with the database of the department.

The showroom’s representative will inform the desk about the purchase of the vehicle, he stated, adding that the registration process will be completed at the desk afterwards and the registration plate will be delivered on the same day.

The will make buying vehicles easier for citizens as there will be no need to come to the Excise and Taxation Office (ETO) to get the vehicle registered, he stated, adding on average the ETO received 200 applications for registration of new vehicles daily.
