LAHORE: The Labour victory in the British general election is the subject of editorials in the morning papers.

While describing the Labour victory as a great event for Britain and the world the “Tribune” says: No Indian patriot and certainly no Indian nationalist expects the victory … to bring a new heaven and a new earth to this country. This is not merely because it is an article of faith with all true nationalists that nations are by themselves made and that India like all countries in her position must primarily work out her destiny herself. The paper, however, considers that a Labour Government would find it extremely difficult to turn a deaf ear to India’s virtually unanimous demand.

The “Civil and Military Gazette” says: It would be easy, particularly in view of the completeness of the political landslide, to describe the British general election as an ideological triumph of the Left over the Right. … The “Daily Herald” writes: Nothing is more satisfying to India than Mr. Amery’s defeat which means the termination of a regime of reactionary retrogression at the India Office. The Sparbrook electors have earned the profound thanks of the Indian people by pronouncing their unequivocal verdict on and against Mr. Amery. …
