India claims arrested Pakistani is a spy

NEW DELHI, Sept 16: Indian police said on Friday they had arrested a Pakistani on spying charges after military papers were recovered relating to a clash between the two South Asian nuclear rivals in 1999.

Another person, described as a “contact” of the alleged spy, was being questioned, a senior New Delhi police officer said.

The Pakistani national, identified by police as Azeem Wali, was arrested while allegedly mailing a package containing military documents to the United Arab Emirates, police anti-espionage chief Ajay Kumar said.

The documents related to an inquest by India into the six-week 1999 battle when Indian troops evicted Pakistani forces from Kashmir’s Kargil mountains, Mr Kumar said.

The papers included “sensitive defence documents, a fake Indian driving licence, a diary containing communication codes, addresses of Pakistan military intelligence officers and an ATM card of Muslim Commercial Bank,” Mr Kumar said.

Wali, a resident of Sadiqabad, a Pakistani town 25 kilometres from the Indian border, arrived in India through Bangladesh and had been staying in a rented house in New Delhi since May last year, he said.—AFP
