GUJRAT: Police on Friday lodged a case against nine officials of the Gujrat District Jail, including its Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum and five death row prisoners.

The case has been registered with the Civil Lines Police Station on the report of Deputy Superintendent of Gujrat Jail Attaur Rehman, following the findings of an initial inquiry conducted into Thursday riot by the inspector general of prisons and other senior officers of the prisons department as well as the local administration.

The riot had erupted when some inmates clashed with an assistant superintendent of the jail and other officials over multiple issues being faced by them, including poor quality of meal, ban on coming out of barracks as well as meeting with visitors and demand of bribe.

The prisoners came onto the roof of jail and chanted slogans against the jail administration.

As a result of the clash, five people, including two jail officials and three inmates, were injured. The injured were shifted to Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital and they were discharged from the hospital on Friday.

The case has been registered under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The initial inquiry report found superintendent Anjum, his deputy Sarmad Hassan, assistant superintendent Muhammad Latif and six warders guilty of corruption, inefficiency, misconduct, negligence, misuse of power, excessive use of force, poor command and control and manhandling of the prisoners.

The inquiry also found some inmates guilty of attacking the jail staff.
